The Wells Historical Society Inc. is a Corporation under Section 402 of the NY Not-for-Profit Corporation Law.

 

The Corporation is also recognized as a 501(c) (3) from the Internal Revenue Service.

 

The Purpose of the Wells Historical Society, Inc:

 

Discovering, procuring, and preserving whatever may relate to the natural, civil, social, cultural and literary history of the Town of Wells, Hamilton County, New York and to establish and maintain collection of historical artifacts, records, photographs and objects relating thereto,

 

About Us

 

The Wells Historical Society, Inc. founded September 7, 1969 was originally called the 1869 Wells Centre Lyceum, 1867 Historical Society.

 

The Society is led by a volunteer Board of Directors whose members are drawn from all segments of the community. The time and energy these individuals devote to the Society is rooted in a deep pride and abiding commitment to Wells, NY community.


Museum Museum Hours: Beginning with Memorial Day weekend, it is open Saturdays 11-3 pm and by appointment-through September or when the OPEN FLAG IS OUT

Membership cards will be available at any regular meeting.

Pelcher, Hiram T Babcock, Fred Houldy, Frank Girard, Truman Brown, Mabel Hosley, Florence Courtney, Mabel Earley, Evelyn Doak, Bertha E Watkins, Arthur Earley, Beatrice Girard, Matilda Bryce, Maude Craig Babcock, John Orr, Ruie Flynn, Mary Simons, Elmer Dampier, Charles Craig, Blanche Ostrander, Carl L Earley, Alex L. Sochuin, Hilda H Catlin, C. R. Catlin, Charles Groat, John Vodron, Diane Van Awsing, Pauline L Burgess Charter memberships were awarded to nine 75-years-old and older residents at a meeting of the Wells Centre Lyceum –1867 Historical Society at the Community Hall. They are Vern Pelcher, the eldest present, age 94; Hiram Babcock, Fred Houldy, Frank Girard, Truman Brown, Mrs. Mabel Hosley, Mrs. Albert Early, Mrs. Bertha Watkings and Mrs. Beatrice Girard. President William Aird listed the officers of the society, which was formed last year, Jack Potter, vice president; Mrs. John Hosley, secretary; John A. Orr, Jr., treasurer. Members of the Board of Directors are Frank Girard, Miss Bertha Babcock, Mrs. John Heffernan, Claude Morrison and Robert Perry. Aird explained that any new member this year would be a charter member. He mentioned that volunteer help would be needed to clean and catalog items donated to the museum. Mrs. Hosley announced that a lease had been obtained at a nominal rate by the society for the old school building to convert to a museum. Circa: Hamilton County News
 
Museum History:

Wells Historical Society Museum opened May2005.

The Wells Museum was made possible by grants provided by Senator Elizabeth O’C. Little, and Assemblyman Teresa Sayward along with a donation from the Town of Wells assisted the Historical Society with purchase of the building as well as materials needed for its renovation. The Wells Garden Club made the Wells Museum project possiblewith. New landscaping, funded by a state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Beautification, grant secured by Senator Elizabeth O’C. Little, designed by Pro Care, Speculator. A donation from the Town of Wells assisted the Historical Society with purchase of the building as well as materials needed for its renovation. Gratitude was extended to the many volunteers who donated hours of time and expertise in carpentry, plumbing, painting, sanding, framing, etc. turning the dream of a town museum into reality.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of many volunteers, numerous moments of Wells’ cherished past will not be forgotten for they are now proudly on display in the Wells Museum.
 
 
 
 
Activities:

Meetings 2021 will be held on the 3rd Monday of the month at the Wells Methodist Church, Rt 30, Main Street. The meeting will commence at 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome.


Fundraising Events:


 May 2021 Annual Town Clean Up Hots and Drinks Booth set up at the Museum
 July 16 & 17 Town-wide Garage Sale; Coffee and donuts, Hots and Drinks set up on front yard of museum
 August 6, 7, 8 Old Homes Day, Raffle; Historic picture display in Community Hall. Stop by the museum during the parade for ice cold soda and water.
 Annual Pot Luck Dinner first Saturday in October.
