The Sole Assessor in the Town of Wells is an appointed position with a six-year term.
The function of this office is to provide the town with an equitable assessment roll each year.
In that pursuit, there are a multitude of laws which must be followed, primarily, the Real Property Tax Law.
- The valuation of all parcels in the town which involves tracking each parcel with respect to condition, construction, alterations, etc. The property owner's taxes are then based on that value.
- Addresses all applications made by property owners for various exemptions allowed by local and state government. This includes the Basic & Enhanced Star, Senior, Veteran, Cold War Veteran exemptions.
- Files the Assessment Roll in a timely manner annually in accordance with various State Laws, Rules and Regulations. The temporary Assessment Roll is completed and filed with the Town Clerk no later than March 1st each year. Both the temporary and final Rolls are available for public review.
- Prepares and files all legal notices and notifications to property owners.
- Is present during Grievance Day.
